Microwave Poached Eggs
Description
Microwave Poached Eggs use water and a small amount of white vinegar in a microwave-safe dish to poach eggs without using a stovetop. The egg is cracked into the water, and the yolk is gently poked with a toothpick to prevent bursting during cooking. Covered with plastic wrap, the egg is microwaved in short increments, usually about one minute, then additional time until the whites firm up while maintaining a soft yolk. The egg is promptly removed from the water to stop cooking and avoid overcooking.
This method produces a tender poached egg with a delicate white and soft yolk, suitable for quick preparation when stovetop poaching is not convenient. It can be served on toast, in salads, or any dish requiring poached eggs.
Because microwave power varies, cook times may need adjusting. Start with one minute and add small increments as needed to achieve your preferred level of doneness. Testing your microwave and egg size will help refine the timing.
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- ⅛ teaspoon white vinegar
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Add water and vinegar to a microwavable dish (I used a measuring cup)
- Crack egg into the water and gently poke yolk 4-5 times with a toothpick. Cover with plastic wrap.
- Microwave 1 minute. Check egg and cook an additional 15-20 seconds if needed. Remove from water immediately to stop it from cooking.
Notes
- Microwave power varies; start with one minute and adjust in 5-15 second increments for desired doneness.
- Remove the egg from the water immediately after cooking to prevent further cooking.
- Piercing the yolk gently prevents it from bursting during microwaving.
