Mint Syrup
Description
Mint Syrup involves boiling a simple mixture of sugar and water, then simmering with fresh mint leaves to extract their flavor gently. The syrup is prepared by simmering rather than boiling the mint to avoid bitterness, resulting in a smooth and bright mint flavor. After simmering, the mixture is cooled and strained to remove leaves, producing a clear, mint-infused syrup. The combination of sugar and mint creates a sweet, aromatic syrup that complements a variety of dishes and drinks.
The syrup's light and crisp character lends itself well to enhancing cold or hot beverages like iced tea, lemonade, or cocktails. It can also be used as a sweetener for desserts like yogurts or ice creams, adding a fresh herbal note. Stored in the refrigerator, it keeps for up to two weeks, making it practical for repeated use.
When making the syrup, it is important to keep the mixture at a simmer rather than a strong boil to preserve the mint's delicate flavors and prevent bitterness. Cooling the syrup before straining avoids burns and helps maintain clarity. Using a sterilized jar for storage keeps the syrup fresh and safe.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup mint fresh, leaves
Instructions
- Stir the sugar and water together in a pot, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, add the mint leaves and allow the syrup to simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the heat, and allow to cool.
- Strain in a fine mesh strainer (or mesh bag) over a bowl and discard the mint leaves.
- Pour into a jar or bottle and keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Keep the syrup at a simmer while infusing to prevent bitterness from boiling the mint.
- Allow the syrup to cool completely before straining to avoid burns and maintain clarity.
- Sterilize storage containers to prolong shelf life and prevent bacterial growth.
- For stronger mint flavor, increase the amount of mint leaves or extend the infusion time.
- If the syrup appears cloudy, strain it a second time for better clarity.
