Mocha Latte (Starbucks Copycat)

Report
The Mocha Latte (Starbucks Copycat) mixes strong coffee with unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and vanilla extract, heated together to meld flavors. Milk is frothed separately to add a creamy texture, and whipped cream made from heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla is dolloped on top. Optional chocolate shavings or syrup provide a final decorative and flavorful touch, giving the drink a rich, smooth chocolate-coffee balance.

Description

This mocha latte starts by blending strong coffee with cocoa powder, sugar adjusted to taste, and vanilla extract, heated until the mixture is smoothly combined. Milk is then warmed and frothed to create a light, bubbly texture before being poured atop the coffee base.

Whipped heavy cream sweetened and flavored with vanilla is prepared separately and added as a topping, providing a thick, creamy contrast to the coffee and chocolate. Optional garnishes like chocolate shavings and syrup enhance both presentation and flavor depth.

The beverage is best enjoyed freshly made, showcasing a harmonious blend of robust coffee, bittersweet cocoa, creamy milk froth, and the indulgence of whipped cream.

Leftover mocha base can be refrigerated for 1-2 days and reheated or served over ice. The coffee base also freezes well in ice cube trays for use in iced or blended drinks.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 ounces coffee strong
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons granulated sugar divided
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
  • 4 ounces milk (dairy or dairy free)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (or store bought whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the coffee, 1-2 tablespoons of the sugar (depending on how sweet you like your coffee), cocoa powder and ½ teaspoon of the vanilla in a medium saucepan over medium high heat.
  2. Continue whisking as it comes to a boil then remove it from the heat.
  3. Heat the milk in a microwave safe bowl for 1 ½ minutes then use an immersion blender or battery frother and froth it until it starts to form little bubbles.
  4. Whip the heavy cream and remaining vanilla in a medium bowl together until it starts to thicken then add the remaining tablespoon of sugar to the heavy cream and whip until stiff peaks form.
  5. Optional: add the whipped cream to a piping bag or a large Ziploc bag with the end cut off with a Wilton2M piping tip.
  6. Pour the coffee into a mug, pour in the milk then dollop on the heavy cream or pipe it into a swirl.
  7. Garnish it with chocolate shavings and chocolate syrup if desired then serve.

Notes

  • Serve the mocha latte immediately for the best flavor and texture.
  • Store leftover coffee base in the refrigerator for 1-2 days; reheat gently or serve over ice.
  • Freeze extra coffee base without milk in ice cube trays for convenient use in iced or frozen coffee drinks.
