Monte Cristo Sandwich

The Monte Cristo Sandwich is a layered sandwich with ham, turkey, and Swiss or provolone cheese between slices of white bread slathered with mayonnaise. The assembled sandwiches are dipped briefly in an egg and milk mixture, then pan-fried in butter until golden and the cheese inside melts. They are traditionally served with powdered sugar and raspberry jam on the side for a sweet-savory contrast. This recipe creates four sandwiches with a crispy exterior and rich, hearty filling.

Description

The Monte Cristo Sandwich combines lunch meats—ham and turkey—with Swiss or provolone cheese layered between slices of white bread spread with mayonnaise. The bread is dipped lightly in a beaten egg and milk mixture just enough to coat without soaking through. Cooking the sandwich in butter over medium heat crisps the bread and melts the cheese inside, creating a combination of textures and warm, savory flavors.

The sandwich’s distinctive feature is the balance between the savory fillings and the sweet garnishes served alongside. Powdered sugar sprinkled on top and raspberry jam on the side offer a gentle sweetness that complements the salty, creamy elements of the sandwich. The melting cheese adds richness, while the toasted bread provides crunch.

This classic sandwich can be enjoyed for lunch or a hearty breakfast. Serving it immediately after pan-frying helps keep the exterior crisp and the interior warm and gooey. Portioning the ingredients and cooking sandwiched individually helps achieve even cooking and melted cheese throughout.

Nutrition estimates are based on the documented ingredients but do not account for the powdered sugar or jam. Adjust these to taste. The layered assembly and careful dipping in the egg mixture ensure the sandwich holds together well through cooking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 12 lices white bread
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 lb ham deli sliced
  • 1/4 lb turkey deli sliced
  • 8 lices swiss cheese or provolone cheese
  • powdered sugar for serving
  • raspberry jam for serving

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and the milk.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Lay 4 pieces of bread down and top with 1 slice of cheese on each piece of bread. Place 1/4 of the ham on top of each piece of cheese.
  4. Take 4 more slices of bread and spread about 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side. Place the mayonnaise side down on top of the ham, then spread another 1/2 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the opposite side of the bread. Repeat with the 3 remaining sandwiches.
  5. Place 1/4 of the turkey on top of each sandwich, then top with another slice of cheese. Place the last 4 slices of bread on top of each sandwich.
  6. Press down on each sandwich firmly to press together slightly.
  7. Dip each sandwich quickly into the egg and milk mixture. They need to be coated, but not soaked.
  8. Place the sandwiches in the skillet with the butter. Cook until the bread is toasted and the cheese on the side against the skillet is melted, then carefully flip the sandwich over and cook the other side.
  9. Slice the sandwiches in half to serve, and serve dusted with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry jam for dipping, if desired.

Notes

  • Nutrition information is an estimate and excludes powdered sugar and raspberry jam toppings.
  • Apply mayonnaise to both sides of the sandwich’s middle bread slice for moisture and flavor balance.
  • Dip sandwiches briefly in egg mixture to coat bread evenly without over-soaking to maintain crispness when cooked.
  • Cook sandwiches until the bread is golden and cheese inside is melted, flipping carefully for even browning.
