Monte Cristo Sandwich
Description
This version of the Monte Cristo Sandwich uses twelve lightly toasted slices of white sandwich bread layered with strawberry or raspberry jam blended with Dijon mustard, Swiss or Gruyere cheese, ham, and turkey. After assembling as a multi-layered sandwich pressed lightly, the sandwich is coated in a whisked mixture of eggs, heavy cream, sugar, salt, dried mustard, and cayenne pepper.
The coated sandwiches are then baked on a hot rimmed baking sheet preheated with vegetable oil until the outside is golden brown and slightly crispy on each side. The final step involves dusting the sandwich with powdered sugar and serving with leftover jam mixture, which provides sweetness complementing the savory and creamy layers inside.
The sandwich combines savory meats and cheese with the custardy egg coating and the sweet-tart jam for a complex flavor and texture experience. Serving immediately after baking preserves the crisp exterior and melted interior balance.
Ingredients
- 4 egg
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 6 tablespoons strawberry jam or raspberry jam
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 12 lices white sandwich bread lightly toasted, hearty
- 18 thin slices swiss cheese or Guryere cheese
- 12 thin slices ham preferably Black Forest, deli
- 12 thin slices turkey deli style
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Adjust oven rack to upper-middle position and preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Whisk together eggs, cream, sugar, salt, dry mustard, and cayenne in shallow dish until combined. Stir jam and Dijon mustard together in a small bowl.
- Spread 1 teaspoon jam mixture on 1 side of each slice of toast. Layer slices of cheese, ham, and turkey over jam on 6 slices of toast.
- Repeat with the second layer of cheese, ham, and turkey. Add final layer of cheese and top with remaining toast, with jam side facing cheese. Using hands, lightly press down on sandwiches.
- Pour oil into rimmed baking sheet, place in oven, and heat until just smoking, about 7 minutes. Meanwhile, using 2 hands, coat each sandwich with egg mixture and transfer to large plate.
- Transfer sandwiches to preheated baking sheet and bake until golden brown on both sides, 4 to 5 minutes per side, using spatula to flip. Remove from oven, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve immediately with remaining jam mixture.
