Monte Cristo Sandwich

The Monte Cristo Sandwich is a layered sandwich of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese between three slices of white bread, coated in an egg and milk mixture, and pan-fried in butter until golden and melted inside. Optionally dusted with powdered sugar and served with strawberry jam, this sandwich blends savory and sweet elements.

Description

This Monte Cristo Sandwich features a triple-layer construction with mayonnaise and optional mustard spread on the bread, slices of Swiss cheese, ham, and turkey. The sandwich is gently pressed and trimmed to seal the layers, then dipped thoroughly in a seasoned egg and milk mixture. It is cooked over low heat in butter until the bread crisps and the cheese melts.

The sweet contrast from powdered sugar sprinkled on top and strawberry jam served alongside adds a classic balance to the savory meats and cheese. The sandwich offers a warm, richness and a mix of textures from the crisp bread crust to the tender melted cheese and meats inside.
