Moscow Mule Drink Recipe
Description
The Moscow Mule Drink Recipe blends several ingredients including ginger beer, vodka, club soda, fresh lime juice, Angostura Orange Bitters, and a small amount of powdered sugar. This cocktail is stirred gently to retain the carbonation, resulting in a fizzy and refreshing beverage served over ice. The drink's flavor profile is lively and slightly sweet with noticeable citrus and warm ginger undertones. Garnishes such as crystallized ginger or fresh mint add a complementary spicy or herbal note.
Traditionally served in copper mugs, the drink takes on a cooler temperature, which enhances the refreshing sensation. Although a copper mug is ideal, the cocktail can also be enjoyed in any glass.
Practical notes include using quality ginger beer like Reed's Extra and the importance of orange bitters to achieve the characteristic flavor. Powdered sugar dissolves easily and lightly sweetens the drink. Preparation is best done just before serving to maintain fizz and freshness, with the possibility to pre-chill and prepare lime juice ahead of time.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces ginger beer preferably Reed's Extra (see note 1)
- 4½ ounces vodka
- 1½ ounces club soda
- 1 ounce lime juice
- ¼ tsp Angostura Orange Bitters (see note 2)
- 1 tsp powdered sugar (see note 3)
- crystallized ginger lime slices, or fresh mint, for garnish (see note 4)
Instructions
- Fill a large cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Pour ginger beer, vodka, club soda, lime juice, and orange bitters into the shaker.
- Gently stir in powdered sugar, being careful not to disrupt the carbonation (do not shake). Strain into two copper mugs or lowball glasses filled with ice.
- Garnish with a skewer of crystallized ginger, lime slices, or fresh mint as desired.
Notes
- Use Reed’s Extra Ginger Beer for authentic flavor, or your preferred ginger beer if unavailable.
- Angostura Orange Bitters are essential; avoid substituting with standard aromatic bitters.
- Powdered sugar dissolves quickly and adds a subtle sweetness, but can be omitted if preferred.
- Garnish options include crystallized ginger, lime wedges, or fresh mint according to taste.
- Prepare and chill ingredients in advance, but mix the cocktail near serving time to preserve carbonation.
- Copper mugs improve the drinking experience by chilling the beverage quickly and enhancing carbonation.
