Muddy Buddies (Puppy Chow)
Description
Muddy Buddies start with plain corn or rice Chex cereal mixed into a glossy chocolate, peanut butter, and butter blend melted gently over low heat to avoid clumping. After removing the mixture from heat and stirring in vanilla extract, the cereal is coated evenly with powdered sugar by shaking it in large freezer bags. This coating provides a sweet, powdery texture that contrasts with the creamy chocolate-peanut butter coating. Cinnamon is optional but adds a warm spice dimension when included.
The addition of M&Ms at the end introduces colorful bursts of sweetness and a slight crunch variation, personalizing the snack. The process of melting on the lowest heat and stirring promptly helps maintain a smooth coating. The cereal is prepared in batches if needed to ensure thorough coverage. The final mix must be stored in an airtight container to maintain freshness, though it often gets eaten quickly.
Muddy Buddies are best served as a casual snack, great for parties, movie nights, or anytime a sweet salty treat is desired. They require minimal ingredients and simple steps but yield a generous batch ideal for sharing. Customize with different M&M colors or add-ins like nuts or pretzels to suit tastes or occasions.
Measure all ingredients beforehand to streamline the process. Store airtight for up to several days, but freshness and crispness are best enjoyed shortly after preparation. Avoid overheating chocolate mixture to prevent seizing.
