Muhammara

Muhammara is a creamy Middle Eastern dip made from roasted red peppers, walnuts, and breadcrumbs blended with olive oil, pomegranate molasses, and spices like cumin and Aleppo pepper. The combination creates a rich, textured spread with a balance of sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors. It’s traditionally served garnished with fresh mint and paired with pita bread for dipping.

Description

Muhammara features roasted red bell peppers pureed with walnuts and breadcrumbs, providing a slightly coarse texture and a nutty base. The addition of extra-virgin olive oil and pomegranate molasses brings a smooth richness and a subtle sweetness with a touch of tang. Garlic, lemon juice, Aleppo pepper or red pepper flakes, and ground cumin add layers of spiced warmth and brightness. Freshly ground black pepper rounds out the flavor profile. The dip is blended until creamy but retains some texture from the nuts and breadcrumbs.

Typically served as an appetizer or side, Muhammara is spooned into a bowl and garnished with fresh mint for a fragrant note. It pairs well with pita bread or vegetables for dipping. Its unique balance of smoky, tangy, and sweet flavors makes it suited for mezze spreads or as a versatile condiment alongside grilled meats or sandwiches.
