Mulled Wine
Description
This Mulled Wine recipe uses a full-bodied red wine combined with whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, sliced orange, and honey. The mixture is heated slowly over low heat for 20 minutes to infuse the wine with aromatic spices and citrus, taking care not to let it boil, which could evaporate alcohol or overly reduce the wine.
The spiced wine warms to a lightly sweetened, fragrant beverage with a balance of spice and bright citrus. Garnishing with additional orange slices, cranberries, or cinnamon sticks adds a decorative and aromatic touch at serving time. Variations include adding brandy, bourbon, cognac, or substituting part of the wine with apple cider to adjust strength and flavor.
Use a red wine with richer berry and spice notes like Merlot, Cabernet, or Zinfandel for best results. Do not skip the sweetener as it balances the spices. Leftover mulled wine can be strained and refrigerated for up to five days or frozen for up to three months.

- 750 ml red wine any wine you'd like
- 6 clove whole

Notes

- Optional additions include brandy, bourbon, cognac, or up to 2-4 cups of apple cider to adjust flavor and alcohol content.
- Always add sweetener like honey or brown sugar to balance acidity and spice in the mulled wine.
- Heat gently without boiling to preserve alcohol and prevent over-reduction.
- Store leftover mulled wine in the refrigerator up to five days or freeze for up to three months after cooling and straining.
