Mummy Dogs

Mummy Dogs feature hot dogs wrapped in crescent roll dough strips, baked until golden to create a playful mummy look. The dough wrapping may overlap irregularly, adding to the charm, while mustard dots and eyeball sprinkles complete the face decoration. Served with a ketchup and mustard dip styled as a spiderweb, these make a fun appetizer or snack. The crescent roll dough turns crisp and flaky during baking, contrasting with the juicy hot dogs inside.

Description

The Mummy Dogs recipe combines hot dogs and crescent roll dough strips twisted around to resemble mummies. Baking at 375° F creates a golden and flaky dough exterior while leaving space at the top of each hot dog for a "face" detail. After baking for about 10-12 minutes until golden, mustard is used for eyes, sometimes topped with eyeball sprinkles for decoration. They are served with a side of ketchup and a spiral of mustard decorated to look like a spiderweb, enhancing the Halloween theme.

The texture offers a crispy outer layer from the dough with the warm, tender hot dog center. The dough wrapping overlaps in places, adding an intentionally rustic look that suits the mummy concept. This makes Mummy Dogs suitable for themed parties or casual snacking.

These can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days and reheated, or frozen for longer keeping. Crescent roll dough can be substituted with pizza dough or thawed bread dough, allowing some flexibility based on preference or pantry supply.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 crescent roll dough sheet
  • 8 hotdog
  • 16 Sprinkles eyeball shape
  • ketchup for serving
  • mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Open the tube of crescent roll dough and roll it out flat. If using precut crescent roll dough, squish the seams together. Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into long, narrow strips.
  3. Wind the strips of dough around each hot dogs, leaving a gap an inch down from the top for a "face". It's okay if the strips of dough overlap or look irregular because it adds to the charm of the mummies. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the crescent roll dough is golden brown. Transfer to a serving plate and decorate with dots of mustard for eyes. If using eyeball sprinkles, stick them onto the mustard to finish.
  5. Serve with a small bowl of ketchup with a mustard spiral squeezed on top. Use a toothpick to draw lines through the mustard to create a spiderweb effect.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in the fridge for 3-4 days and reheat in microwave or oven.
  • Freeze for 2-3 months for longer storage.
  • Pizza dough or thawed frozen bread dough can replace crescent roll dough if desired.
