Mushroom Sauce for Steak
Description
This Mushroom Sauce for Steak combines sautéed cremini mushrooms and garlic cooked in butter to create a flavorful base. Adding chicken broth and heavy cream creates a smooth, rich sauce, which thickens as it simmers. Dijon mustard provides a mild sharpness, while Worcestershire sauce adds complexity and depth. Salt and cracked black pepper season the sauce, enhancing the mushrooms' earthiness. This sauce is well-suited for steak and can be garnished with extra cracked black pepper for texture and flavor.
The cooking method focuses on browning the mushrooms first to intensify their flavor before simmering the sauce ingredients to thicken. The resulting texture is creamy with tender mushroom slices throughout. This makes it a convenient way to add moisture and complexity to grilled or pan-seared steak without overpowering the meat.
To serve, spoon the hot sauce over cooked steak, letting the sauce mingle with the meat juices. It’s a practical way to dress up steak for a meal without complicated preparation steps or excessive ingredients. It also pairs well with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables, where the creamy sauce adds another layer of flavor.
A helpful tip is to stir in a couple tablespoons of freshly grated Parmesan cheese to enrich the sauce further, or sprinkle Parmesan on top after serving. This can add a slightly nutty dimension but is optional depending on cheese preferences.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms thinly sliced, or baby bella mushrooms
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 ½ teaspoons garlic minced
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper or to taste, cracked
Instructions

- Stir in mushrooms and garlic. Saute 3-4 minutes until mushrooms are browned.
- Stir in broth, cream, dijon, worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Continue to stir periodically for 5-8 minutes until liquid is reduced and thickened and creamy.

Notes
- Consider adding 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese into the sauce to enhance richness.
- Sprinkle Parmesan over the steak after spooning the sauce for extra flavor and texture.
