Mushroom Sauce for Steak

This mushroom sauce for steak blends sautéed mushrooms cooked down with butter, red wine, beef broth, thyme, and garlic powder, thickened with cornstarch. It creates a savory, aromatic sauce with tender mushroom pieces perfect for topping steak.

Description

The Mushroom Sauce for Steak recipe starts by melting butter in a pan and cooking sliced mushrooms until they reduce by half, concentrating their flavor and softening their texture. Red wine and beef broth along with fresh thyme and garlic powder are added next, simmering to meld flavors and soften the mushrooms further.

After removing the thyme sprigs, a cornstarch slurry is whisked into the sauce to thicken it slightly, producing a velvety consistency that clings well to steak. The final seasoning with kosher salt and black pepper balances the sauce. The combination imparts a rich, earthy, and mildly herbal profile that complements the meat.

This sauce is best served hot over grilled or pan-seared steaks, enriching the meat with mushroom umami and a wine-accented depth. It can also accompany other roasted or grilled meats to add moisture and flavor.
