My Grandmother's Bourbon Balls

My Grandmother's Bourbon Balls are no-bake treats made from crushed vanilla wafers, finely chopped walnuts, sweetened condensed milk, and bourbon. After chilling the mixture, it is shaped into balls and rolled in powdered sugar, producing bite-sized, flavorful confections with a moist, rich texture and pronounced bourbon flavor.

Description

This recipe for Bourbon Balls combines finely crushed vanilla wafers and chopped walnuts with sweetened condensed milk and bourbon to create a sticky, flavorful dough. Once chilled, the mixture is shaped into small balls and coated in powdered sugar, which adds a sweet exterior and prevents sticking. The bourbon imparts a distinctive warmth and depth that complements the nutty and sweet components.

The texture is moist and dense, with the cookie crumbs providing a slight crunch that balances the creamy condensed milk and the sharpness of the bourbon. These treats are served chilled and are suitable for parties, holidays, or as an indulgent snack.

Storage is convenient since Bourbon Balls can last in the refrigerator for several days and can even be frozen for up to a month. To preserve their fresh appearance, it is recommended to roll them in powdered sugar just before serving if they have been frozen.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups Vanilla Wafer I used an entire 11 ounce box, finely crushed
  • 1 cup walnut finely chopped
  • 1 sweetened condensed milk 14 ounce can
  • 1/3 cup bourbon
  • powdered sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. Combine wafer crumbs and nuts in a large bowl. Add condensed milk and bourbon. Blend well. Chill for about 1 hour.
  2. Pour about 1 cup of powdered sugar into a shallow dish.
  3. Dip the palms of your hands into the powdered sugar and shape the “dough” by teaspoonfuls into round balls. Roll in powdered sugar.
  4. Store bourbon balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Use a high-quality bourbon that you enjoy drinking, as its flavor is prominent in the balls.
  • Bourbon Balls can be prepared 1-2 weeks in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Freeze for up to one month by wrapping tightly in plastic wrap and foil; roll in powdered sugar again before serving.
  • Keep them refrigerated to maintain texture; they may soften if left out too long.
