Nacho Dog
Description
For Nacho Dogs, hot dogs are placed in buns and baked with crumbled tortilla chips and shredded Mexican cheese until the cheese melts and the components warm through. This creates a satisfying balance of a soft bun with crunchy chip fragments and rich melted cheese. Topped with fresh salsa, guacamole, crema Mexicana or sour cream, and chopped cilantro, the flavors range from spicy and tangy to creamy and herbaceous.
The baking process ensures the cheese is fully melted and the hot dogs are heated nicely while allowing the tortilla chips to soften slightly but remain recognizable. The layered toppings add coolness and freshness that contrast with the warm hot dogs and melted cheese, providing an engaging texture and flavor combination.
This recipe is best served immediately after assembly while the cheese remains melted and toppings fresh. The components can be stored separately and reheated if needed, making it flexible for making ahead or serving to a group in portions.
Ingredients
- 8 hotdog or Polish sausages
- 8 hot dog buns
- 4 cups tortilla chips any variety, partially crumbled
- 2 1/2 cups Mexican cheese blend shredded
- 1 cup salsa fresh
- 1 cups guacamole fresh
- 1/2 cup crema mexicana or sour cream
- 1/2 cup cilantro freshly chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the hot dogs in the buns and place them on a baking sheet. Pile 1/2 cup crumbled chips on top of each hot dog, followed by a heaping 1/4 cup of shredded cheese. Bake for 5-8 minutes, until the cheese is melty and the hot dogs are warmed through.
- Top each dog with salsa, guacamole, crema Mexicana, and cilantro. Serve warm.
Notes
- Prepare only the number of nacho dogs you intend to eat immediately for best texture and flavor.
- Store components such as salsa, guacamole, and crema separately for freshness if making ahead.
- Reheat assembled nacho dogs in the oven until warmed through and cheese is melted.
