Nashville Hot Sauce Recipe

Nashville Hot Sauce is a spicy condiment made by combining clarified butter with cayenne pepper, brown sugar, spices, and optionally honey. The sauce is simmered gently to blend flavors but remains slightly separated in texture. Its heat level can be adjusted, offering a smoky, sweet, and spicy profile traditionally used to coat fried chicken or add punch to various dishes.

Description

The Nashville Hot Sauce recipe uses clarified butter as a base, which provides a rich, smooth vehicle for the intense heat of cayenne pepper balanced with the sweetness of brown sugar and optional honey. Additional spices—garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and kosher salt—enhance depth and bring savory notes alongside the heat and sweetness.

The sauce is prepared by stirring the ingredients over low heat until combined, taking care to avoid high temperatures that could cause the sugars to caramelize and change texture. Although the mixture may separate slightly, shaking or stirring before use re-emulsifies the sauce adequately.

This sauce is ideal for coating fried chicken to add a signature fiery kick characteristic of Nashville-style hot chicken or for drizzling over any dish that benefits from a spicy, buttery heat.
