Natural Cough & Cold Remedy
Description
The remedy blends pearl onions, turmeric, ginger, horseradish, jalapeño, garlic, and lemon inside a jar filled with apple cider vinegar. The ingredients are kept fully submerged and left to ferment in a dark place for four weeks, allowing the vinegar to infuse with the pungent and spicy notes of the roots and peppers. This fermented infusion can then be strained and mixed with raw honey, which adds sweetness and soothes the throat.
The flavors include a blend of sharpness from horseradish and garlic, warmth from ginger and jalapeño, brightness from lemon, and earthiness from turmeric and onions. It can be used as a salad dressing, taken in small shots, or added to other remedies depending on preference.
The fermentation process enhances the bioactive compounds and develops probiotic potential, making this a natural supplement to help ease cold and cough symptoms rather than a cure. Adjusting the honey allows control of sweetness and medicinal potency.
Ingredients
- ½ cup pearl onions peeled and sliced
- ½ cup turmeric root peeled and chopped
- ¼ cup ginger root peeled and chopped
- ¼ cup horseradish peeled and chopped
- ½ jalapeño seeded and chopped
- 4 cloves garlic peeled and chopped
- 1 lemon zested and juiced
- 1 bottle apple cider vinegar large
Instructions
- Divide all ingredients evenly (except apple cider vinegar) into two large mason jars.
- Pour apple cider vinegar over the ingredients so that the vinegar is roughly two to three inches above.
- Fill a small Ziplock bag ⅓ of the way with water. Place the baggy into the jar and use a spatula to press all the roots/ingredients down as much as possible to make sure everything is submerged.
- Tie off the bag or wrap around mouth of the jar. Place parchment paper over the jar and then cap the jar.
- Let ferment in a dark area for four weeks. When ready, strain out the roots and whisk in raw, local honey to taste.
Notes
- Use any type of onion if pearl onions are unavailable, but peel and slice it finely for better infusion.
- Chop all vegetables finely to improve flavor extraction during fermentation.
- Always use raw, unpasteurized honey to preserve its natural benefits when sweetening the remedy.
- Adjust the amount of honey added based on the intended use, such as more for salad dressings or less when taking concentrated doses.
