New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich

The New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich is a substantial Italian-style sandwich layered with deli sliced ham, salami, provolone, and Swiss cheeses. It's distinguished by a tangy, chunky olive salad made from green olives, giardiniera, cocktail onions, and pickled vegetables dressed with olive oil and red wine vinegar. The sandwich features a round Italian loaf that is hollowed out slightly to better accommodate the fillings. The olive salad lends a bright, piquant contrast to the rich cured meats and cheeses.

Description

The New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich combines a dense, round Italian bread loaf with layers of ham, salami, provolone, and Swiss cheese. The key feature is the olive salad, which mixes chopped green olives, giardiniera, cocktail onions, banana peppers, carrots, celery, garlic, olive oil, red wine vinegar, and seasonings. This salad is mixed and allowed to sit, which enhances its flavor and moisture.

The loaf is sliced in half horizontally and partially hollowed out on the top half to reduce bulk. Some olive salad juice is drizzled on the bottom half of the bread to moisten it. Meat and cheese layers follow, topped generously with the olive salad. The sandwich may be assembled traditionally or flipped after filling to help meld the layers.

This sandwich combines savory, tangy, and slightly spicy flavors from the meats, cheeses, and vibrant olive salad. It's hearty and ideal for lunch or casual gatherings. Leftover olive salad is versatile and can be served with antipasto or salads.

The notes advise selecting a giardiniera with more red peppers and cauliflower, choosing a dense Italian bread loaf for structural support, and making extra olive salad to have on hand for other uses. Softer breads won't hold up well to the filling's moisture and weight.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Olive Salad:

  • 7 ounces green olive 1 jar, small
  • 16 ounces giardiniera roughly chopped (1 jar, mix
  • 3 ounces cocktail onion roughly chopped (1 jar)
  • 2 ounces capers
  • 1/4 cup banana pepper or pepperoncinis, chopped
  • 1/2 cup carrot diced
  • 1/2 cup celery diced
  • 1-2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich:

  • 1 loaf Italian bread round
  • 1/2 pound ham deli sliced
  • 1/2 pound salami deli sliced
  • 1/2 pound provolone cheese sliced
  • 1/2 pound swiss cheese sliced

Instructions

For the Olive Salad:

  1. Drain the brined ingredients. Roughly chop the cocktail onions, giardiniera mix, and banana peppers. Add all the ingredients to a medium bowl and mix well. Set aside while preparing the rest of the sandwich. The longer it sits, the better!

For the New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich:

  1. Slice the loaf of bread in half to make a top and bottom for the sandwich. Hollow out some of the bread on the top half, so it won’t be too tall to fit in your mouth.
  2. Drizzle some of the olive salad juice on the bottom half of the loaf. Layer the ham, provolone, salami, and swiss cheese on the sandwich.
  3. Top the meats and cheeses with a generous portion of olive salad and add the bread top. Or live adventurously... Fill the hollowed-out bread top with salad, place the bottom half over it, and FLIP! Cut into pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Choose a giardiniera mix rich in red peppers and cauliflower for better flavor balance in the olive salad.
  • Use a round Italian loaf with dense, firm texture; avoid soft French breads which won't support the filling well.
  • Prepare extra olive salad, as the recipe makes more than needed for one sandwich; leftovers are excellent with antipasto or as a salad topping.
