Ninja Foodi Cinnamon Dehydrated Apples

Thinly sliced apples are soaked in a lemon juice or white vinegar solution to prevent browning before being dehydrated in a Ninja Foodi at low temperature. The slices are arranged in a single layer and sprinkled with cinnamon, which infuses a warm, gently spicy note. This drying process produces crisp apple chips suitable for snacking or topping dishes.

Description

The Ninja Foodi Cinnamon Dehydrated Apples recipe involves preparing thin apple slices that are soaked in an acidulated water mixture made from lemon juice or white vinegar and water to prevent discoloration during drying. After draining and patting dry, the apple slices are arranged without overlap on a dehydrator rack and dusted with cinnamon. The Ninja Foodi is then set to its dehydrator function at 135°F (57.2°C) to gently dry the slices until crisp. This method preserves the fruit’s sweetness and adds a subtle cinnamon flavor.

The final dehydrated apples develop a crisp texture, similar to apple chips, with a mild tang from the pretreatment and warm spice from cinnamon. The drying temperature and time ensure the moisture is removed while maintaining thinness and an appealing bite.

These cinnamon apple chips can be enjoyed as a light snack, a topping for oatmeal or yogurt, or an addition to trail mix. The recipe includes a pretreatment step and careful slicing thickness to ensure even drying. For air fryers without a dehydrator function, there is an alternate method that fries the slices at 350°F, flipping halfway through, to achieve crispness.

Proper drying and spacing of apple slices are essential for the best result. Adjust drying times based on slice thickness and local humidity. The chips will crisp further as they cool. Store in an airtight container after cooling to maintain texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 apple
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (more if preferred)
  • tablespoon lemon juice to make the pretreatment solution, or white vinegar
  • 1 quart /liter of water (to make the pretreatment solution)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry the apples. Using a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife, slice the apples thinly and evenly between ⅛ inch and ¼ inch thick, so they can dry properly.
  2. Make a pretreatment solution (acidulated water) by combining the lemon juice or white vinegar with one quart (approximately one liter of water) and soak the apple slices in it for 10 minutes. Drain off the pretreatment solution, place the apples on a baking tray, and pat dry using a kitchen towel. Make sure to dry them properly before dehydrating them to enable them to dry faster.
  3. Place the apple slices on top of the dehydrator tray or rack in a single layer without overlapping and sprinkle some cinnamon on top. You can also sprinkle the cinnamon once they have dehydrated if you prefer a less intense flavor. Make sure there is some space between the slices to enable air to circulate properly. Carefully place the rack inside your Ninja Foodi.
  4. Set your Ninja Foodi to the dehydrator function at 135°F (57.2°C), close the lid, and set the time to 8 hours (see notes for how to air fry if your air fryer does not have the dehydrator function).
  5. Dehydrate the apples, quickly checking on them at every 3-hour interval until they develop a crispy texture and feel dry to the touch. Dehydrate them for a shorter amount of time, if you prefer your apple chips leathery.
  6. Once the apples have dried, switch off the dehydrator and remove the rack. Allow the apple slices to cool to room temperature.
  7. Once cooled, transfer the dehydrated apple chips to a bowl. Sprinkle with some cinnamon on top (optional) then transfer them to airtight jars or containers, properly labeled with a best-by date. Store in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Notes

  • Slicing apples evenly between ⅛ and ¼ inch thick helps ensure proper drying.
  • Soaking the apple slices in a lemon juice or vinegar solution prevents browning during dehydration.
  • Make sure apple slices are fully dried before dehydrating to speed up the process.
  • Arrange slices in a single layer with space between them to allow air circulation.
  • Adjust drying time depending on apple thickness and environmental humidity.
  • Apple chips crisp more as they cool; store cooled chips in an airtight container.
  • For air fryers lacking a dehydrator function, air fry at 350°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping once, possibly longer if needed.
