No Sugar Added Homemade Applesauce

No Sugar Added Homemade Applesauce uses a blend of apples cooked down with warming spices, lemon juice, and water or optional orange juice for moisture and flavor. The apples are peeled and chunked, then gently simmered until softened. The final sauce can be mashed for a chunky texture or pureed smooth depending on preference. It’s a naturally sweetened, wholesome alternative to store-bought applesauce.

Description

This homemade applesauce starts with peeled and chopped apples, recommended as a mix of Pink Lady and Granny Smith for balanced sweetness and tartness. They are simmered in a pot with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice, and filtered water, with optional orange juice for added complexity. The mixture cooks covered until the apples break down, usually 30–45 minutes with occasional stirring.

The spices contribute a warm, aromatic background, enhancing the natural apple flavor without added sugar. After cooking, the applesauce can be mashed to leave some texture or pureed until smooth. It can be served warm or cooled, making it versatile for different uses.

This applesauce offers a wholesome, homemade option suitable for snacks, side dishes, or dessert additions. The absence of added sugar preserves the fruit’s natural profile, letting the spices and lemon brightening stand out.

  3. Mash apples with a potato masher for a chunky consistency. For a smoother consistency, puree the applesauce in a food processor or with an immersion blender.
  4. Enjoy cooled down or warm! Store in fridge.
