Non Alcoholic Mint Julep
Description
This Non Alcoholic Mint Julep recipe involves dissolving sugar in club soda over heat, then combining it with lime juice and concentrated lemonade for tartness and depth. After boiling, creme de menthe syrup and green food coloring are added to develop the characteristic mint flavor and color. The syrup can be mixed with water to adjust overall sweetness and intensity for serving.
The drink is typically garnished with fresh mint leaves, lemon slices, and cherries to replicate the classic julep’s presentation. The syrup can be prepared several days in advance and kept refrigerated in an airtight container. When mixing individual servings, using half a cup of mint syrup per cup of water allows control over flavor strength. It’s important to use alcohol-free creme de menthe syrup rather than the alcoholic liqueur to maintain the non-alcoholic profile. The carbonation and mint flavor diminish if stored too long once mixed.
Making your own creme de menthe syrup involves steeping fresh mint leaves in a sugar-water syrup and then straining, with optional addition of mint extract to boost flavor.
Ingredients
- 3 cups club soda
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 teaspoons lime juice
- 6 ounces lemonade concentrate thawed
- 6 tablespoons creme de menthe syrup
- green food coloring
- mint for garnish, leaves
- lemon for garnish
- cherries for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium pot, dissolve the sugar in the club soda by stirring constantly on medium heat. Add lime juice and lemonade concentrate and bring to a boil.
- Remove from heat and add creme de menthe syrup and food coloring. Chill.
- Add the mint syrup mixture to ⅔ gallon of water or, for smaller servings, mix 3 parts syrup to 5 parts water. ENJOY!
Notes
- Use alcohol-free creme de menthe syrup to keep this mint julep non-alcoholic.
- The syrup can be refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 5 days before mixing.
- Mix about ½ cup syrup per 1 cup water for single servings; adjust to find your preferred flavor balance.
- Freshly made syrup steeped with mint leaves and enhanced with mint extract yields the best mint flavor.
- Leftover non-alcoholic julep can be refrigerated 1-2 days before mint flavor and carbonation fade.
- Lemonade concentrate is used for a stronger lemon flavor than lemon juice alone.
