Nutella Stuffed Waffles
Description
Nutella Stuffed Waffles start with a batter made from self-raising flour, milk, melted unsalted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract, creating a lightly leavened waffle with a tender texture. Diced bacon is fried until crispy and combined with Nutella, a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread, to create the waffle filling. After cooking the waffles in a waffle iron, each is cut in half and layered with Nutella and bacon, then sandwiched and briefly reheated to melt the Nutella. This process marries the warm, soft waffles with a sweet and salty filling, bringing a rich flavor contrast.
The waffles can be kept warm in an oven on a wire rack, and oiling the waffle iron before each batch helps prevent sticking. Slightly increasing the heat or avoiding opening the iron mid-cooking can improve crispiness. The recipe notes warn against overmixing the batter to prevent dense waffles and suggest storing leftovers refrigerated for up to two days. This preparation offers a unique blend of sweet and savory suitable for a special breakfast or brunch occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 6 lices unsmoked bacon diced
- 1.9 cups milk 450ml
- 4.4 ounces butter melted, unsalted
- 3 egg beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 10.5 ounces self-raising flour 300g
- Nutella
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a pan and fry the bacon till done. Remove the bacon and set aside somewhere warm.
- Whisk together milk, butter and eggs and vanilla and set aside.
- Add flour into a large bowl and make a hole in the middle.
- Slowly whisk the milk mixture into the flour to make a batter and don't worry if there are some lumps.
- Cook the waffles according to your waffles maker instructions until all the waffle batter is finished and set aside somewhere warm.
- Cut each waffle in half, spread some Nutella on one half, top with some bacon and the second half. Repeat till all the waffles are done.
- Then flatten the waffles a bit and return to the waffle maker and cook for a further minute till the Nutella is all melty. Repeat till all the waffles are cooked.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Keep cooked waffles warm in a 200°F (94°C) oven on a wire rack for 5-10 minutes to maintain texture.
- Lightly oil the waffle iron before each batch to prevent sticking and improve crispiness.
- For crisper waffles, increase waffle iron temperature, but avoid opening it during cooking to prevent breakage.
- Do not overmix the batter; lumps are fine to avoid dense waffles.
- Store any leftover waffles in the refrigerator for up to two days.
