Oklahoma Chili

Oklahoma Chili is a hearty stew of browned ground beef simmered with tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, masa, and a blend of chili and garlic powders, cumin, and seasonings. Its thick texture and rich savory flavor benefit from an hour of slow simmering, making it a robust main course served with classic toppings.

Description

Oklahoma Chili is prepared by browning ground beef seasoned with garlic powder, then combining it with tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, masa to thicken, and spices including chili powder, cumin, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Worcestershire sauce adds umami depth. The chili simmers covered on low heat for an hour, allowing flavors to meld and thicken.

This chili develops a thick, rich texture with a balance of spice and savoriness. The masa provides subtle corn flavor and a smoother body. It is traditionally served with shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onions, sour cream, Fritos, and cornbread, creating layers of texture and taste with creamy, crunchy, and hearty accompaniments.

The method emphasizes occasional stirring during simmering to prevent sticking and to ensure even flavor distribution. This chili suits a filling meal on cooler days or casual gatherings.
