Old Fashioned
Description
The Old Fashioned uses bourbon as its base spirit, combined with a sugar cube infused with several dashes of bitters to mellow and add complexity. Ice chills the drink while stirring ensures proper dilution without excessive wateriness. The orange peel is warmed near a flame to release essential oils before being squeezed over the glass and deposited inside, imparting a fragrant citrus aroma without bitterness.
A cherry garnish is optional and can provide a hint of additional sweetness. The cocktail is served in a short glass and can be adjusted by proportions or small spritzes of soda water for dilution preferences.
To enhance the experience, use minimal pith on the orange peel to avoid bitterness and consider chilling the glass beforehand or using large ice cubes for slower dilution. The recipe can easily be scaled up for multiple servings in a larger mixing vessel.
Ingredients
- 2¼ oz bourbon 67mL
- 1 orange peel
- 4 dashes bitters
- 1 sugar cube
Instructions
- Cut a one inch circle of orange peel.
- Place a sugar cube in glass and saturate with bitters.
- Muddle the sugar cube and then add 1½ oz of bourbon.
- Add ice and stir well.
- Using a match or lighter warm the orange peel up, then squeeze while holding at a 45 degree angle over glass. Wipe peel on rim of glass and drop in.
- Add a cherry (optional), and ¾ oz of bourbon and give a final stir. You may add a small spritz of soda if you desire. Garnish with a strip of orange peel and enjoy!
Notes
- Omit added water or soda to avoid diluting the bourbon's flavor.
- Limit bitters dashes to prevent overpowering the drink.
- Use orange peel with minimal pith to prevent bitterness in aroma and taste.
- Chill glasses in the freezer or fill and freeze with water ahead for optimal cocktail temperature.
- Large ice cubes slow melting and keep the drink less diluted.
- Garnish with a Luxardo cherry on a toothpick or inside the drink for added flavor and presentation.
- Adjust quantities carefully when making larger batches; use an appropriately sized mixing container.
