Old Fashioned Baked Beans

Old Fashioned Baked Beans combine browned bacon and ground beef with sautéed onion and a mixture of kidney beans and baked beans in a rich sauce made of ketchup, barbecue sauce, molasses, brown and white sugar, mustard, and spices. Slow baking allows flavors to meld into a sweet, savory, and hearty bean dish with a classic American taste.

Description

This recipe starts by browning diced bacon, ground beef, and diced onion in a skillet to develop a savory base. The excess fat is drained before combining the browned meat mixture with canned kidney beans and two cans of baked beans, providing a variety of bean textures.

The sauce is prepared by mixing ketchup, barbecue sauce, molasses, white and light brown sugar, prepared mustard, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes for a balance of sweetness, tang, and mild heat. This sauce is combined with the beans and meat, then baked uncovered to thicken and deepen the flavor.

Baking at 350°F for about 1 hour and 15 minutes allows the sauce to reduce and soak into the beans, creating a rich, hearty dish that works well as a side for barbecues, picnics, or comforting family meals.
