Old Fashioned Beef Stew Gravy

Old Fashioned Beef Stew Gravy features beef chuck browned and simmered with diced carrots and onions in a simple sauce seasoned with salt and pepper. Flour is added at the end to thicken the stew into a rich gravy. This dish offers tender meat and softened vegetables in a hearty, savory sauce suitable as a comfort food component alongside grains or potatoes.

Description

This stew gravy starts with cubed beef chuck browned on all sides to develop flavor and texture. Carrots and onions are added and cooked until softened, imparting natural sweetness and depth to the dish. Water is then added, and the mixture simmers at low heat for at least 45 minutes until the beef becomes tender.

To achieve a thickened gravy consistency, flour is whisked into cold water to form a smooth slurry and stirred into the simmered stew. Additional simmering lets the flour cook through and thickens the broth. The result is a savory, cohesive sauce coated with tender chunks of beef and softened vegetables.

This gravy pairs well with grains like rice or mashed potatoes, making it a simple but satisfying meal foundation. It relies on classic seasoning and slow simmering to draw out the beef flavor without any complicated additions.
