Old Fashioned Green Beans
Description
This recipe combines fresh green beans with crisped bacon cooked in a skillet, then simmers the beans in a mixture of soy sauce, brown sugar, and water. The simmering softens the beans to a crisp-tender texture while allowing the flavors to meld, making the green beans richly flavored with smoky, sweet, and salty notes.
The bacon not only adds chewiness but also provides fat that carries the sauce across the beans. Adjusting salt and pepper at the end ensures the seasoning suits your taste. The green beans become a satisfying accompaniment to many main dishes.
Besides green beans, this method works well with other vegetables like carrots or asparagus. The recipe notes show the dish can be refrigerated safely for several days and frozen for longer storage, maintaining good texture when reheated.
Ingredients
- 10 Bacon chopped into 1/4 inch pieces, strips
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce low sodium
- 2 tablespoon brown sugar packed
- ½ cup water
- 1½ pound Green bean fresh
- ⅛ teaspoon salt or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper or to taste
Instructions
- Add the chopped bacon to a large skillet and cook over medium heat until the bacon is nice and crisp and most of the fat has rendered, should take about 5 minutes.
- Add the soy sauce, brown sugar and water to the skillet and stir. Bring to a boil.
- Add the green beans and toss them around a bit, so they get covered in the sauce. Reduce the heat to a medium-low, cover the skillet with a lid and simmer for 15 minutes. The green beans should be crisp-tender when done.
- Season with salt and pepper if needed, then serve.
Notes
- This cooking method is versatile and can be applied to various vegetables like carrots, broccolini, or asparagus.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- These green beans freeze well; keep in a sealed container or tightly wrapped for 4 to 6 months.
