Old Wives Cake

Old Wives Cake is a traditional cake using all-purpose flour, sugar, brown sugar, spices like cinnamon and anise seed, combined with egg, water, and sour cream or yogurt for moisture. The batter is baked in a cake or bundt pan to create a spiced, tender crumb cake with a balanced sweetness and comforting aroma from the anise and cinnamon. It’s a simple cake that pairs well with tea or coffee.

Description

This cake blends dry ingredients including flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda and powder, salt, with distinctive spices like anise seeds and cinnamon. Wet ingredients of egg, water, and sour cream (or yogurt) add moisture and tenderness to the batter. The mixture is baked at 375°F until a toothpick tests clean, yielding a moist cake with aromatic spice notes.

Old Wives Cake offers a soft texture with subtle anise flavor that sets it apart from standard spice cakes. It’s suitable as a snack or light dessert, especially enjoyed during tea time or casual gatherings.
