One Hour Cinnamon Orange Rolls
Description
One Hour Cinnamon Orange Rolls use a dough made with all-purpose flour, sugar, active dry yeast, milk, butter, water, vanilla extract, orange zest, cinnamon, and eggs. The dough is sticky and enriched with citrus zest and warm spices, contributing both flavor and aroma. After a short resting period, it is rolled into a rectangle and layered with melted butter followed by a mixture of sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, and freshly grated nutmeg.
The rolled dough is then sliced and baked at 350°F to produce tender, soft rolls with a sweet, citrus-spiced filling. The orange glaze made from powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and zest is applied to add brightness and additional sweetness, enhancing the orange flavor throughout.
The preparation method balances quick yeast rising with flavorful ingredients to deliver these soft orange cinnamon rolls in roughly one hour. They make a sweet breakfast or dessert option highlighted by the blend of citrus and warming spices.
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter unsalted
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons orange zest freshly grated
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 egg large
filling
- 8 tablespoons butter unsalted, melted
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons orange zest freshly grated
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
orange glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup orange juice freshly grated
- 1 teaspoon orange zest freshly grated
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- In the bowl of your electric mixer, stir together 2 cups of the flour, sugar and yeast.
- Place the milk and butter in a small saucepan and heat over low heat just until the butter melts. Remove from the stovetop and let sit for 2 to 3 minutes, then stir in the water and vanilla extract.
- With the dough hook attached to your mixer, stir in the milk and butter mixture until combined. Add the orange zest, salt, cinnamon and the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. The dough will be very sticky! Add the remaining 3/4 cup flour gradually, beating for another 2 to 3 minutes until the dough comes together again. It should still be sticky. Place it in a bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, roll it out on a floured surface to a 14x10 inch rectangle (or something close to that!). Add the filling - add the melted butter on the dough. Whisk together the sugar, orange zest, cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle it all over top. Starting with one of the long sides, roll it up tightly. Slice the roll into 1-inch cinnamon rolls. Place them in a baking dish - either a 10-inch round or a 9x9-inch square - you can every do a 9x13 pan. You can also just arrange them in a christmas tree shape on a baking sheet! Be prepared they may spread a bit. Let the rolls sit for 5 minutes.
- Place the rolls in the oven. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until golden brown on top. Remove and cover with the orange glaze. Serve warm!
orange glaze
- Whisk ingredients together until a smooth glaze forms. If it’s too thick, add more orange juice 1 teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, whisk in more sugar a few tablespoons at a time until desired consistency is reached.
