One Pan Baked Ziti
Description
This One Pan Baked Ziti begins by browning Italian sausage with garlic and red pepper flakes, followed by simmering with diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and herbs like basil and oregano. Adding water and dry ziti pasta, the mixture cooks covered until the noodles are tender.
The sauce is enriched with half and half and Parmesan cheese, and mozzarella is scattered on top before transferring the skillet to a hot oven to melt and lightly brown the cheese layer. This results in a creamy, well-seasoned pasta dish with a tender pasta texture and a golden cheese crust.
Ideal as a main meal, it can be prepared ahead of time up to the point before cooking the noodles and finished when ready. It is also freezer-friendly, wrapped and frozen for up to three months, with instructions for thawing or baking from frozen.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Italian sausage ground
- 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 5-6 cloves garlic , minced
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes crushed
- 1 Tablespoon basil or 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves added at the end, dried
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano dried
- 3 cups water
- 12 ounces ziti pasta (or similar pasta)
- 1/2 cup half and half (or heavy cream)
- 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
- black pepper freshly ground
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
- Heat a large 12-inch or bigger oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook, crumbling into small pieces, until browned, about 3-5 minutes. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper flakes to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried basil and oregano. Stir well. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5-10 minutes.
- Add the water and dry pasta. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes or until noodles are tender.
- Stir in the half and half, and parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle mozzarella evenly on top.
- Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until the cheese has melted and browned, about 5 minutes. Enjoy!
Notes
- Prepare the sauce and meat mixture ahead, up to adding and cooking noodles, to save time before serving.
- Freeze the prepared but unbaked dish for up to 3 months; thaw overnight or bake from frozen following specified times for best results.
