One-Skillet Ham and Cheese Gnocchi
Description
One-Skillet Ham and Cheese Gnocchi brings together soft gnocchi cooked in a creamy blend of water and heavy cream, sautéed onions, diced ham, and peas. The ham adds a smoky element, while peas provide a pop of color and subtle sweetness. After combining and simmering the gnocchi until tender, the dish is topped with a generous layer of shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese. A brief broil melts and lightly browns the cheese, creating a golden crust that complements the creamy base.
The method uses one pan to build flavor, starting with caramelized onions and browned ham, which layer into the sauce. This dish offers a hearty texture contrast between the pillowy gnocchi and slightly crisped cheese topping. Its balance of savory and mild flavors suit a casual dinner or lunch. It can be served as a main course by itself or alongside a fresh salad for added freshness.
The recipe notes highlight storage options, recommending cooling completely before refrigerating in an airtight container for up to four days. For freezing, omit adding gnocchi and cheese until reheating to maintain texture. Thawing overnight ensures even reheating on the stovetop before finishing with cheese under the broiler.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 cups ham diced
- 1 cup pea frozen
- 16 ounce gnocchi uncooked (1 package)
- 1½ cup water
- ½ cup heavy cream
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- ½ cup cheddar cheese shredded, sharp
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Add onions and cook until tender. Add ham to skillet and cook until ham starts browning.
- Add peas to skillet and stir. It's ok if peas are frozen. Add gnocchi to skillet, then water and heavy cream. Stir and let cook for about 5 minutes until gnocchi is tender and sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Sprinkle with cheese on top and place skillet under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes until cheese melts and start slightly browning.
Notes
- Store the cooked dish refrigerated in a shallow airtight container for 3 to 4 days once fully cooled.
- For freezing, prepare the base without gnocchi and cheese, freeze in a shallow airtight container, and thaw overnight before adding gnocchi and cheese and reheating.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop before broiling cheese topping for best texture and flavor.
