Orange Caramel Syrup

Orange Caramel Syrup is a rich, buttery sauce combining brown and white sugars with buttermilk, golden syrup, and orange zest and juice for a sweet, tangy flavor. Simmered to blend and thicken, it finishes with vanilla extract for depth, making it suitable as a versatile topping or flavor enhancer.

Description

This Orange Caramel Syrup recipe creates a sweet sauce with a nuanced citrus note. The primary ingredients include unsalted butter, a mix of brown and granulated sugars, buttermilk, and golden or corn syrup, which provide a creamy, caramel base. Fresh orange zest and orange juice concentrate add bright citrus tones, while baking soda helps lighten the texture.

The mixture is brought to a boil in a large pot to allow the sugars to dissolve and the syrup to reduce slightly, then simmered gently for 8-9 minutes to develop flavor and thickness without burning. After removing from heat, vanilla extract is stirred in, adding aroma and complexity.

This syrup can be refrigerated and gently warmed before serving. It’s suitable for drizzling over desserts, pancakes, or ice cream, or used to add a citrusy caramel note to drinks or baked goods.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter unsalted
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar white
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup or corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest freshly grated
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate or 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice plus 1/2-1 teaspoon orange extract, frozen
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract quality pure

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients, except for the vanilla extract, to a medium-large stock pot (it will bubble up pretty high, so don't use a small one). Bring it to a boil, reduce heat to a low boil and simmer for 8-9 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (and orange extract if using). To store, keep refrigerated and heat to serve.
