Orange Fig Jam
Description
Orange Fig Jam brings together fresh figs chopped into pieces and infused with the zest of organic orange and lemon, balanced by sugar and Grand Marnier. The mixture is allowed to macerate, then boiled and mashed to dissolve the sugar and soften the fruit, resulting in a thick, textured jam rich with fruity and citrus flavors. The cooking process includes careful boiling and stirring, then pouring into sterilized jars to seal the jam safely. Proper sealing ensures the preservation of flavor and prevents spoilage.
The jam's citrus zest adds brightness and complexity to the natural sweetness of figs, while the Grand Marnier contributes subtle depth. This jam serves well as a spread on bread or toast, a topping for yogurt or desserts, or as a complement to cheese plates.
Achieving a proper seal by using sterilized jars and hot lids is essential for long-term storage. Jars that fail to seal should be refrigerated and consumed relatively quickly to avoid spoilage. This jam benefits from patience during cooking to enhance the texture and melding of flavors.
Ingredients
- 4 ½ cups figs stems removed and cut into 1/2" pieces, fresh
- 1 orange zest organic
- 1 lemon organic, zest
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 oz Grand Marnier
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Place the figs in a large pot the add the orange and lemon zest, sugar, Grand Marnier and pinch of salt. Stir and let stand at room temperature for one hour, stirring occasionally.
- After an hour, put the pot on medium high heat and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
- Reduce heat to medium and continue to boil for approximately half an hour, stirring and mashing the figs with a potato masher, to crush the pieces. Remove from heat.
- Ladle into rinsed, hot clean jars (rinsed with boiling water), leaving about 1/4″ space at the top, clean the rim and cover with hot lids (also rinsed with boiling water) immediately.
- When cool, the lids will "POP" and become concave in the middle. If this does not happen, the seal is not good and you will have to store these jars in the fridge.
Notes
- Sterilize jars and lids thoroughly with boiling water before filling to ensure safe preservation.
- Allow the jam to cool in sealed jars until lids "pop" to indicate a vacuum seal has formed.
- Store unsealed jars in the refrigerator and consume promptly to prevent spoilage.
- Follow proper processing guidelines or refrigerate after opening to maintain quality and food safety.
