Outback Steakhouse Baked Potato

Outback Steakhouse Baked Potato recipes call for russet potatoes that are rubbed with vegetable oil and sprinkled with kosher salt before baking at 350°F for about an hour. The key is not to prick the skin, which contributes to a tender yet slightly crispy skin after baking. The simple preparation highlights the potato's natural flavors and yields a classic baked potato texture that's fluffy inside and lightly crisp outside.

Description

The Outback Steakhouse Baked Potato uses whole russet potatoes which are washed, dried, and coated with vegetable oil and kosher salt before baking. This method creates a skin that crisps in the oven while keeping the interior soft and fluffy. Baking is done at a moderate 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour, checked by a fork to confirm tenderness.

Notably, the recipe cautions against poking holes in the potato, a common step in some baked potato methods, to avoid overcooking and potential bursting. The oil and salt treatment enhances the texture and flavor, extending beyond a simple boiled or microwaved potato.

This baked potato serves well as a side dish for steak or other hearty main courses and can be topped with toppings like sour cream, chives, butter, or cheese per individual preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 russet potatoes about 1/2 pound each
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Wash and dry the potatoes and do not poke each potato once or twice with a fork. Again, do not poke any holes in the potato. Potatoes only explode when they are overcooked.
  3. Pour the vegetable oil into a small dish and dip a paper towel into the oil. Rub the oil all over each potato.
  4. Place the potatoes on a baking sheet. Sprinkle salt over the potatoes.
  5. Bake for about 1 hour. Check the potatoes for doneness by inserting a fork into one. If it presses through easily, the potato has completed cooking.
