Oven Baked French Fries
Description
The recipe starts by washing and cutting potatoes into uniform ¼-inch sticks for even cooking. Soaking them in cold water for 30 minutes removes excess starch, contributing to crispier fries. Drying thoroughly is essential to avoid soggy texture. The fries are tossed with olive oil and seasonings including salt, paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper, which add a balanced savory and smoky flavor.
Baking on a parchment-lined sheet at 425°F, with fries spaced to avoid crowding, allows hot air circulation for crispness. Tossing halfway through ensures even browning. The fries finish seasoned with more salt right after baking to bring out their flavor.
Leftovers can be stored for up to five days in an airtight container; reheating in the oven or air fryer helps restore some crispness, although they will not be as crisp as freshly baked.
Ingredients
- 4 russet potato
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 2 teaspoons salt divided
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Wash the potatoes and scrub their skin to clean them as much as possible. Cut the potatoes into ¼-inch wide sticks
- Place the potatoes in a large bowl and submerge with cold water. Soak for 30 minutes. Drain the potatoes and dry very well using paper towels or a kitchen towel.
- Transfer the dried potatoes to the prepared baking sheet. Add olive oil and season with 1 teaspoon salt, paprika, garlic powder and black pepper. Toss well to coat.
- Arrange fries in a single layer on the baking sheet, making sure they aren’t touching too much. This is key in helping them cook evenly and get crispy.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, tossing at the halfway point to ensure even baking.
- Season with the remaining salt immediately when they are done cooking.
Notes
- Store leftover fries in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5 minutes or use an air fryer to regain some crispness.
