Oven Baked Potatoes
Description
To make Oven Baked Potatoes, large russet potatoes are scrubbed clean and pierced with a fork multiple times to allow steam to escape. After lightly coating them with neutral oil and sprinkling with kosher salt, the potatoes are placed directly on an oven rack and baked at 350°F for about an hour. A baking sheet positioned below catches any drippings during the baking process.
The result is a potato with a crisp skin and a soft, fluffy interior. The texture balance makes it easy to open the potato by gently pressing the ends towards each other. The method enhances the simple potato flavor and provides an ideal base for a wide range of toppings from butter and chives to more loaded options like cheese, bacon, sour cream, or chili.
These baked potatoes are convenient as a side dish or a meal base that can be customized. Cooking multiple potatoes requires additional baking time to ensure even doneness. Serving ideas provided include simple seasoning, Tex-Mex styles, and combinations with broccoli or chili, covering various flavor profiles.
Ingredients
- 1 large russet potato
- 1 teaspoon neutral cooking oil vegetable or canola oil, generic cooking oil
- kosher salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees and position racks in top and bottom thirds. Scrub and rinse potato (or potatoes) thoroughly with cold water. Dry well. Using a fork, poke 8 to 12 deep holes all over the potato.
- Place in a bowl and coat lightly with oil.
- Sprinkle with Kosher salt and place potato directly on the wire rack in the middle of oven. Place a baking sheet on the lower rack to catch any drippings.
- Bake 1 hour or until skin feels crisp but flesh beneath feels soft. Serve by creating a dotted line from end to end with your fork, then crack the potato open by pushing the ends towards one another. The potato will be hot and steamy, so be careful!
Notes
- When baking more than four potatoes, increase the oven time by up to 15 minutes to ensure even cooking.
- Favorite toppings range from simple butter and chives to loaded options like cheddar, bacon, sour cream, salsa, black beans, guacamole, broccoli, chili, and more.
- Use a fork to prick the potatoes multiple times before baking to prevent bursting and promote even cooking.
