Oven Baked Tuna Melt on Ciabatta

The Oven Baked Tuna Melt on Ciabatta is a toasted open-faced sandwich featuring tuna mixed with shallots, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and parsley, layered on toasted ciabatta bread then topped with tomato slices and cheddar cheese. Broiled until the cheese bubbles and browns lightly, it yields a warm, savory dish with contrasting textures from the crisp bread, creamy tuna, and melted cheese.

Description

This recipe begins by toasting thick slices of ciabatta bread under a broiler until lightly golden. Meanwhile, a filling is prepared by combining canned tuna, well drained and packed in oil, with minced shallots or green onions, mayonnaise, lemon juice, chopped flat-leaf parsley, salt, and black pepper. This mixture is spooned evenly on each piece of toasted bread.

The tuna topping is garnished with slices of roma tomato and shredded cheddar cheese. The assembled open-faced sandwiches return to the broiler to cook until the cheese melts and turns golden and bubbly, adding a rich, creamy layer over the tangy tuna and fresh tomato. The ciabatta provides a sturdy base that holds the moist filling without becoming soggy, giving a crispy contrast.

Served immediately, this dish offers a satisfying combination of textures and balanced flavors suitable for lunch or a light dinner. The use of tuna packed in oil enhances flavor depth, and the lemon juice adds bright acidity to the creamy filling.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lices ciabatta bread or other substantial bread
  • 12 ounces tuna well drained, canned; packed in oil
  • 2 tablespoons shallot or substitute green onion, minced
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (regular or reduced fat)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon flat leaf parsley minced
  • teaspoon salt
  • black pepper to taste
  • 2 Roma tomato sliced
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese shredded

Instructions

  1. Turn the oven on to broil. Place the bread, cut side up, on a baking sheet. Place the pan in the oven at least 6-inches below the broiler unit and toast until the bread is a light golden color.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, shallot (or green onion), mayonnaise, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper.
  3. Spread ¼ of the tuna mixture on each slice of toast.
  4. Top with a few tomato slices and 2 tablespoons of cheese on each.
  5. Broil the sandwiches until the cheese is bubbling and golden, 3 to 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Ciabatta or similarly sturdy bread is best to withstand the moisture of the tuna filling without becoming soggy.
  • Tuna packed in oil is preferred for richer flavor though calorie difference is minimal.
