Overnight Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole

This Overnight Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole layers sourdough bread with apple pie filling, soaked in an egg, milk, and spice cake mix custard. A crumbly cinnamon-sugar flour topping adds texture before baking to a golden finish. The included homemade caramel sauce enriches the dish's sweet profile, making it a filling breakfast or brunch option that benefits from overnight preparation to let flavors meld.

Description

Overnight Caramel Apple French Toast Casserole combines pieces of sourdough bread with apple pie filling, soaked in a custard base made with eggs, milk, heavy cream, spice cake mix, cinnamon, and vanilla. The topping mixture of flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter is scattered atop before baking, creating a crumbly contrast to the soft soaked bread. Baking is done until the center sets and edges brown, producing a comforting baked breakfast dish.

The recipe finishes with a caramel sauce made from butter, sugars, cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla. This sauce adds richness and sweetness that complements the cinnamon and apple components.

This casserole works well prepared overnight, as soaking allows the bread to absorb flavors fully. It serves well as a special weekend brunch dish that holds warmth for serving after baking.
