Overnight French Toast Casserole
Description
This casserole uses French bread cut into chunks that are soaked in an egg-milk custard with sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. After soaking, a cinnamon and sugar mixture is sprinkled on top before baking. The soaking time, ideally overnight, allows the bread to absorb the custard fully, ensuring a creamy texture inside with a flavorful crust.
The dish bakes in a 350-degree oven until the top is golden brown and set. This produces a soft and rich interior that contrasts with the lightly crisped top layer where the cinnamon sugar caramelizes. The balance of vanilla and cinnamon flavors adds warmth and sweetness, complementing the bread's sturdy texture.
Overnight French Toast Casserole works well for breakfast or brunch, providing a make-ahead option that saves morning time. Leftovers can be stored airtight in the refrigerator for up to five days. For longer storage, the dish can be frozen before baking and thawed overnight when needed, then baked fresh for best texture.
