Overnight Pecan Pie French Toast Casserole
Description
The recipe begins by creating an egg custard mixture with milk, cream, eggs, and vanilla, which soaks thick slices of French bread overnight to absorb the rich flavors. A separate pecan topping combines melted butter with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, molasses, maple syrup, and chopped pecans. This mixture is spread in the casserole dish before layering the soaked bread slices on top.
Baking at 350°F allows the pecan layer to caramelize slightly, providing a crunchy contrast to the soft, custardy bread. Flipping the slices after baking exposes the sweet pecan layer on top when serving. The mixture of warm spices and syrupy pecans evokes pecan pie flavors, making this a comforting choice for a weekend breakfast or holiday brunch.
Serving the casserole warm maximizes the contrast between crispy pecans and moist bread. The recipe's overnight soak also aids in hands-off preparation, allowing the dish to be ready with minimal active cooking in the morning.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup milk whole
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 egg room temperature, large
- 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1 French bread cut into 8-10 slices, loaf
- 6 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1 1/2 cups pecans chopped
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine the milk, cream, eggs, and vanilla, beat until well combined, and set aside.
- Arrange the bread slices in a large shallow bowl and pour the milk mixture over the bread. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or better overnight.
- When ready to bake, first preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- In the meantime, place a small saucepan over medium heat, add the butter, and melt it.
- Once melted, remove the mixture from the heat and whisk in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, molasses, maple syrup, and pecans. Stir well until combined.
- Spread the pecan mixture evenly on the bottom of a 9x13 casserole dish.
- Gently handling the soaked bread slices arrange them on top of the pecan mixture.
- Bake for 35 minutes. Cool for 5-10 minutes, then flip the slices and serve warm!
