Overnight Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole
Description
This dish assembles cooked sausage with diced bell pepper and onion, combining these with cubed white bread and a generous amount of cheddar cheese in a baking pan. The beaten eggs mixed with milk, dry mustard powder, salt, and pepper are poured over the layered ingredients. Refrigerating the casserole overnight ensures the bread soaks fully in the custard, resulting in a custardy interior once baked.
Baking uncovered at 350°F for 45 minutes the next morning produces a golden brown crust and a soft, flavorful center. The sharp cheddar cheese brings a rich, tangy element that complements the sausage and vegetables.
This casserole is suitable for a hearty breakfast or brunch, serving several people easily. It pairs nicely with fresh fruit or a simple green salad for a balanced meal.
Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and freeze well in individual portions for up to 4 months. Reheat gently in a microwave or oven to maintain texture.
