Overnight Strawberry Cream Cheese-Stuffed French Toast Casserole

This Strwaberry Cream Cheese-Stuffed French Toast Casserole uses cubed French or brioche bread, layered with cold cream cheese and fresh sliced strawberries. It soaks overnight in an egg, milk, sugar, and vanilla custard before baking, yielding a custardy center with pockets of creamy cheese and sweet fruit. Powdered sugar makes for a delicate finishing touch. It’s a sweet, elegant breakfast or brunch option made ahead for convenience.

Description

The Overnight Strawberry Cream Cheese-Stuffed French Toast Casserole features cubed crustless French bread or brioche layered with cold cream cheese cubes and fresh sliced strawberries. The custard mixture of eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, almond extract, and a pinch of salt is poured over the bread to saturate it. After an overnight chill to absorb flavors, the casserole bakes until set and golden.

The baking yields a dish with a tender, moist bread base punctuated by creamy pockets of cream cheese and bursts of fresh sweet strawberries. This combination provides rich, tangy, and fruity notes contrasting softened bread texture. Dusting with powdered sugar adds an extra touch of sweetness and presentation.

This casserole suits holidays or weekend mornings when you want a prepared, indulgent breakfast. Variations in bread type, milk, or sweetener level can be used to customize flavor and richness based on preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 ounces French bread crusts removed, and cut into cubes, or brioche bread
  • 8 ounces cream cheese cubed
  • 4 cups strawberries fresh, sliced
  • 10 egg large
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract optional
  • salt pinch
  • powdered sugar for garnish

Instructions

  1. Layer half of the bread cubes over the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch dish.
  2. Place the cream cheese cubes over the bread cubes.
  3. Layer the sliced strawberries over the cream cheese, and cover with the remaining bread cubes.
  4. Combine the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract if using, and pinch of salt in a medium bowl. Mix well.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, and smoosh the bread down a little so that the bread can absorb the egg mixture.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  7. Take the pan out of the refrigerator and leave out while preheating the oven to 375F.
  8. Uncover and bake for about 30-40 minutes.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use cold cream cheese cubes for better texture and even distribution within the casserole.
  • Fresh strawberries work best to maintain bright flavor and texture; avoid frozen.
  • Any milk type can be used, including nondairy alternatives like almond milk.
  • Sugar addition can be adjusted depending on the natural sweetness of strawberries.
  • Alternative bread choices like Italian or Challah also work well in this recipe.
