Pan-Fried Ham Steak
Description
This recipe cooks fully cooked ham steaks cut into halves, allowing for easy portioning. The ham is pan-fried in melted butter over medium heat, first seasoning one side with garlic powder, dried thyme, and cayenne to add subtle herbs and gentle heat. Cooking until browned creates a flavorful crust. Maple syrup is added near the end and combined with pan juices to glaze the ham as it finishes cooking, providing a sweet counterpoint to the salty meat.
The result is tender, juicy ham with nicely caramelized edges and a balanced flavor of savory herbs, a hint of spice, and sweet maple. This makes an efficient, flavorful dish perfect for serving alongside eggs for breakfast or paired with vegetables or potatoes for any meal.
Because ham is already salty, no additional salt is needed. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to five days and can be reheated gently in the microwave at reduced power to preserve texture and moisture.
Ingredients
- 2 ham 8 ounces each, fully cooked, steaks cut
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon thyme dried
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup
Instructions
- Cut each piece of ham in half. Each half will be a serving.
- Heat a large, 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add the butter. Once the butter melts, swirl it to coat the bottom of the skillet.
- When the butter starts foaming, add the ham in a single layer. Sprinkle the ham with garlic powder, dried thyme, and cayenne pepper.
- Cook until browned on the bottom, about 3 minutes.
- Add the maple syrup to the skillet and swirl to combine with the pan juices. Turn the ham to the other side and cook until browned on that side, about 2 more minutes.
- Transfer the ham to plates. Drizzle or brush it with the pan juices. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Do not add extra salt since ham is already salty; saltiness varies by brand.
- Add maple syrup midway through cooking to prevent excessive caramelization or burning.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days.
- Reheat leftovers in the microwave at 50% power, covered, to maintain moisture.
