Pan-Seared Mushroom Steak Chunks

Pan-Seared Mushroom Steak Chunks feature bite-sized cubes of seasoned steak seared to develop a browned, crispy edge, paired with browned cremini mushrooms and fragrant garlic. The combination creates a hearty dish where the spices highlight the meat and mushrooms while the searing locks in flavor and texture. This method suits a quick, rustic main, served hot straight from the skillet.

Description

This recipe calls for cutting steak into 2-inch chunks, seasoned with a mix including smoked paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and cayenne pepper, contributing a smoky and mildly spicy profile. The steak cubes are seared in a hot pan with olive oil in batches to ensure a good crust without overcrowding. This method preserves juiciness inside while achieving a well-browned exterior.

After steak pieces are rested, cremini mushrooms are cooked in the same pan with additional olive oil until well browned. Minced garlic is added briefly to release aroma and flavor, then the cooked steak is returned to the pan and tossed to combine and warm through. The final dish offers a blend of tender, spicy meat and savory mushrooms uplifted by garlic.

The steak and mushrooms can be served immediately as a simple sautéed dish, fitting well as a main course alongside bread, rice, or vegetables. Using a mix of seasoning makes the dish robust without overpowering the meat’s flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • lb steak (sirloin, rump, NY strip, porterhouse, or ribeye), cut into 2-inch cubes
  • lb cremini mushroom halved if large
  • ¼ Cup olive oil divided
  • 4 garlic minced, cloves
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 Tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ Tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tsp onion powder
  • 1 Tsp chili powder or to taste
  • ½ Tsp cayenne pepper or to taste

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl combine the smoked paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and cayenne. Add the steak pieces and toss until evenly coated in the seasoning blend.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil starts shimmering, sear the steak pieces in batches, for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until the edges are browned and crispy.
  3. Add additional oil in between batches, if necessary. Transfer the steak to a plate and set aside.
  4. Return the skillet to the heat and reduce to medium. Heat the remaining olive oil in the pan, and add the mushrooms.
  5. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until well browned. Add the garlic and cook, scraping any bits from the bottom of the pan, until the garlic is fragrant, 30-45 seconds.
  6. Return the steak to the pan, tossing to combine with the garlic-mushroom mixture, and to get everything heated through. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Good steak choices include sirloin, rump, NY strip, porterhouse, or ribeye, cut into uniform cubes for even cooking.
  • Any mushroom variety can be used, but cremini provide a balanced earthiness.
  • Cook steak in batches to avoid steaming and to develop a crispy crust.
