Pancake Sausage Bites
Description
The sausage, either original or maple-flavored and fully cooked, is crumbled and rolled into small balls. These are cooked through in a skillet and then coated with a batter made from Bisquick, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, egg, and milk. Frying in hot oil crisps the batter outside while maintaining the juicy sausage inside.
The maple dipping sauce combines maple syrup, butter, and heavy cream heated together to create a smooth, rich condiment that complements the savory bites with sweetness and creaminess. The cinnamon in the batter pairs well with both the sausage and maple flavors, adding warmth.
This snack or breakfast item offers a handheld, flavorful option combining familiar breakfast tastes. It accommodates readily available cooked sausages and uses a quick batter mix allowing easy preparation for gatherings or family meals.
If using raw sausage, form into balls and cook thoroughly to safe internal temperature before proceeding with batter coating and frying.
Ingredients
Pancake Sausage Bites
- 8 sausage patties original or maple, fully cooked, brand: Jimmy Dean
- 1 ½ cups Bisquick
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- 5 ounces milk
- canola oil for frying
Maple Dipping Sauce
- ½ cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
Instructions
Pancake Sausage Bites
- Place about 2-inches of oil in a deep-sided skillet or saucepan and place over medium heat.
- Crumble the sausage patties in a medium bowl. Then use your hands to form the crumbles into 18 small sausage balls.
- Place the sausage balls in a large skillet over medium heat and cook for about 15 minutes, turning often. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the Bisquick, sugar, and cinnamon. Whisk in the vanilla, egg, and milk until smooth.
- Pick up each cooked sausage ball with a toothpick and dip it into the batter so the sausage ball is completely covered.
- Carefully lower the coated sausage balls into the hot oil and fry for about 1- 1 ½ minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat with remaining sausage and batter.
Maple Dipping Sauce
- Pour the maple syrup into a small bowl and add the butter. Microwave for 45 seconds. Remove and stir until the butter has melted into the syrup.
- Pour in the heavy whipping cream and stir until combined.
- Serve the pancake sausage bites warm with the maple sauce poured over the top or in a bowl for dipping.
Notes
- Nutrition information does not include the maple dipping sauce.
- If pre-cooked sausage patties are unavailable, raw breakfast sausage can be formed into balls and cooked fully as directed before battering.
