Parmesan Pumpkin Fritters

Parmesan Pumpkin Fritters are lightly fried patties combining shredded pumpkin with flour, egg, milk, and cheese, bound with a touch of baking powder for fluffiness. These golden fritters offer a tender interior with a crisp exterior and are seasoned simply with salt and pepper. Paired with Thai sweet chili sauce, they balance savory and sweet flavors well, making a great snack or appetizer showcasing pumpkin's texture and subtle sweetness.

Description

Parmesan Pumpkin Fritters mix shredded pumpkin with a small amount of flour, egg, milk, and grated Parmesan to form a batter that holds together when fried. Baking powder adds a slight lift for a light texture, while seasoning with salt and black pepper enhances flavor without overpowering the natural pumpkin. The fritters are fried in neutral oil until both sides are golden and cooked through.

The contrast between the crispy fried edges and the tender pumpkin inside makes them enjoyable finger food or a unique side dish. The use of shredded pumpkin, rather than pureed, provides texture and moisture without heaviness. Serving them hot with Thai sweet chili sauce adds a touch of spicy-sweet flavor that complements the nutty Parmesan and earthy pumpkin tones.

Kabocha or Japanese pumpkin varieties can be used for sweeter, more flavorful fritters, but common pumpkin works well too. The recipe is straightforward, relying on minimal ingredients and a quick frying method to create appetizing fritters that highlight seasonal pumpkin.

Ingredients

Servings
  • neutral cooking oil for frying, generic cooking oil
  • 1 1/4 cups pumpkin shredded
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese shredded
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 dashes black pepper ground
  • Thai sweet chili sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Mix the pumpkin, flour, egg, milk, cheese, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Stir to combine well; the mixture should barely bind together and not be wet or watery.
  3. Using a spoon, scoop up the pumpkin mixture and drop it gently into the hot oil. Fry in batches until both sides are golden brown and the inside is cooked through. Remove from the oil with a strainer and transfer the fritters to a plate lined with paper towels. Serve hot with Thai sweet chili sauce.

Notes

  • Use kabocha or Japanese pumpkin for a sweeter flavor in the fritters if available.
