Pea Salad

This Pea Salad mixes defrosted green peas with crispy bacon, diced red onion, and cubed cheddar cheese in a creamy dressing of sour cream, mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Chilling it for at least an hour helps the flavors meld, resulting in a crunchy, tangy salad ideal for side dishes or potlucks. The combination of textures and the balance of creamy, sweet, and savory notes make it distinctive.

Description

Pea Salad combines tender green peas thawed from frozen with cooked, crispy bacon pieces, finely diced red onion, and sharp cheddar cheese cubes. The dressing blends sour cream and mayonnaise with sugar and vinegar to add both creaminess and a slight tang, balanced by salt and pepper.

After mixing the dressing and salad ingredients, letting it chill brings depth to the flavor and softens the sharpness of the onion and bacon. The salad is refreshing, with a mix of creamy and crunchy textures, and the sweet-sour dressing complements the smoky bacon effectively.

This salad pairs well with grilled meats or as part of a buffet. Leftovers keep for a few days refrigerated, but the bacon may lose its crispness over time. The dressing can be made ahead of time to save preparation effort on serving day.

When thawing peas, drain them well to avoid excess moisture diluting the dressing. The salad can be made hours or a day in advance, though bacon crispiness diminishes the longer it sits.

Notes

  • Thaw frozen peas overnight in the refrigerator or quickly under cool running water; drain well before use.

  • The salad can be assembled hours or a day ahead; however, bacon will lose some crispness if left in the dressing too long.
  • Store leftovers for 2-3 days refrigerated and consume promptly.
