Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Description
Peppermint Hot Chocolate combines unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and whole milk heated gently to just below boiling. Semisweet chocolate chips are stirred in to create a smooth, rich base. Vanilla and peppermint extracts add a delicate mint flavor that is balanced, not overpowering. The drink is carefully heated to avoid boiling, ensuring the milk does not separate or curdle.
The resulting beverage is creamy and mellow with a hint of refreshing peppermint. It’s topped with garnishes like marshmallows, whipped cream, and crushed candy canes, which add sweetness and texture contrast.
This recipe is well suited for serving in mugs during cold weather or festive occasions. The peppermint extract amount can be adjusted to suit taste preferences, making it a customizable treat for mint lovers.
Since peppermint extract is potent, starting with 1/4 teaspoon helps avoid overwhelming the chocolate flavor. It’s important to maintain gentle heat to keep the mixture smooth and stable.
Ingredients
- 4 cups milk whole
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder sifted, unsweetened
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract
- marshmallow garnishes such as crushed on candy canes
- Whipped Cream
- candy cane
Instructions
- Place the milk, cocoa powder and granulated sugar in a pot.
- Cook over medium low heat for about 4-5 minutes, whisking occasionally, until the mixture is warm and the cocoa and sugar are thoroughly incorporated. You want the milk to be at a light simmer, but do not bring it to a boil.
- Add the chocolate and cook for another 3-4 minutes, whisking continuously.
- After the chocolate has fully melted into the milk, add the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Cook for 1 minute.
- Serve the hot chocolate in mugs topped with garnishes as desired.
Notes
- Use 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract to add mint flavor without overpowering the chocolate.
- Heat mixture gently to just below boiling to prevent curdling or separation.
- Customize toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, or crushed candy canes as desired.
