Pickled Red Onions Recipe

Pickled Red Onions are made by thinly slicing red onion and soaking them in a hot mixture of water, apple cider or rice vinegar, sugar or honey, and salt. After at least 30 minutes of soaking, the onions develop a tangy, sweet sharpness and a crisp texture that complements many dishes.

Description

This recipe prepares red onions by peeling and slicing them thinly into rounds. The pickling liquid consists of hot water combined with apple cider vinegar (or rice vinegar), sugar or honey, and salt stirred until dissolved. The warm liquid helps infuse the onions quickly. The sliced onions are submerged fully in the pickling solution in an airtight container or jar.

After a minimum of 30 minutes soaking, the onions become tangy and slightly sweet with a pleasant crunch retained. This quick pickling method provides a vibrant, flavorful condiment to use atop salads, tacos, sandwiches, or grilled dishes, adding brightness and acidity.

Prepared pickled onions should be stored refrigerated and used within two weeks to maintain freshness and optimal flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 red onion large
  • ½ cup water hot
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onion into 1/8th inch rounds.
  2. Find a glass jar or airtight container, that is large enough to hold the sliced onions and liquid.
  3. Pour the hot water into the container and stir in the sugar or honey, and salt. Stir until it dissolves. Then stir in the vinegar.
  4. Add the onions slices and press them down to make sure they are submerged. Let the onions soak and “pickle” in the liquid for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Serve, or cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • Store pickled onions in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks for best quality.
  • Do not freeze pickled onions to avoid texture degradation.
  • Ensure onions are fully submerged in the pickling liquid to pickle evenly.
