Pierogi Casserole
Description
This recipe layers frozen potato pierogis and sliced kielbasa sausage in a greased casserole dish. A sauce blended from softened cream cheese, sour cream, chicken broth, black pepper, and green onions is poured over the mixture before baking. Covered during the first 30 minutes, the casserole cooks evenly while the sauce thickens. Removing the cover to add shredded sharp cheddar cheese for the last 10 minutes creates a melted, golden top layer. The final garnish of remaining green onions brightens the flavors.
The dish balances tender pierogis with savory kielbasa, creamy sauce, and cheddar’s sharpness, resulting in a filling, crowd-friendly dish that pairs well with simple salads or steamed vegetables for a full meal.
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and can be reheated in portions using a microwave to maintain sauce and cheese textures.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces potato pierogi frozen
- 14 ounces kielbasa sausage sliced
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 4 ounces cream cheese softened
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 3 green onions sliced
- 1 cup cheddar cheese I use sharp cheddar, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9 x 13“ casserole pan with cooking spray.
- Place the pierogis and sliced sausages into the casserole pan.
- Mix the cream cheese, sour cream, chicken broth, pepper, and half of the green onions in a medium mixing bowl. Pour the sauce over the top of the pierogies and sausage.
- Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over the top and bake uncovered for 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
- Top with the remaining green onions and serve.
Notes
- Kielbasa can be substituted with other fully cooked smoked sausages or turkey and chicken sausage for variety.
- Shredding cheddar cheese from a block is recommended for better melting and flavor; mild cheddar or other preferred cheeses also work.
- Store leftover casserole refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days and reheat in small portions in the microwave before serving.
